Neil Munch (1926-2014), one of the Founders of the Natural Philosophy Alliance.

Neil Munch co-founded the Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA). His interests focused on studies of the speed of light, resulting in over 100 published papers. In 2011, he was awarded the NPA Sagnac Support Award for Lifetime Achievement “In recognition of a lifetime commitment to excellence in scientific pursuit, as well as for leadership and organization in co-founding the Natural Philosophy Alliance, for opening doors of communication with scientists in Russia and the rest of the world, and for inspiring the control of assumptions in thinking about fundamental physics.”

I first met Neil in 2000 at an NPA conference. Before that I had taken three university level courses in special relativity and three more in general relativity. They all left me with more questions than answers. My professors were no help. When I met Neil, I found that not only did he have the same questions, but articulated them with a rare precision and had the answers I was looking for. He obviously spent more time analyzing the problem than Einstein and was far more careful. He left a body of work which must be read by anyone seeking to further mankinds understanding of the universe.

But Neil was far more than a theoretician. He was an organizer. The Natural Philosophy Alliance would not exist if it were not for Neil and his wife, Eleanor. They were the NPA’s backbone for nearly 20 years. When something needed done, they did it. Their dedication to the advancement of pure knowledge was unique in my experience.

Neil will be missed, but his thoughts and ideas will always be with us.
